History was made today when Pratibha Patil was sworn in as the country’s first woman President, who favoured socially inclusive economic growth and unity in the fight against divisive tendencies like communalism. The world’s largest democracy will be presided over by a woman, one of the mightiest militaries in the world will have a woman Commander-in- Chief. Rubber stamp or not, it surely is a momentous day for Indian Polity. And sometimes it’s better to have a rubber stamp than a hyper-active moron.
A point is made across the Blogam, that she is not qualified enough for the job. I think she would do atleast as good as her predecessor who really didn’t know he had a job. BTW, what happened to Afzal’s mercy plea, did he make paper missiles with it? . Qualification per se, its tough to decide.
Maybe,
- Two decades as a state Cabinet Minister, handling two dozen portfolios is not enough.
- Handling few of the highest offices in the Indian Parliamentary system (Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha; Chairman, House Committee, Lok Sabha) is not enough
- A non-Rubber stamp tenure as Rajasthan’s Governor is not enough
Whom do we nominate then Kiran Bedi, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw. How bout Hema Malini or Arundhati Roy. Bipasha or Shilpa?. They have proved their grit by doing things like?
Ha the CNN-IBN crowd never gets it. Then I am not trying to praise Pratibha Aunty, I am trying to bury this sick presidential election, thanks to Advani and Co.
The Losers :
The BJP : Not just the fact that even their legislators cross-voted and Pratibha won by an unexpectedly high margin. BJP took this election to the lowest level of poli-tricking. The official mud slinging campaign against Pratibha reached a level of personal vendetta. The venom in the Know Pratibha campaign was something which only the BJP is capable of. Why didn’t they learn a lesson after the “Know-Muslims” CD backfired in the UP elections. Why did saner voices like Vajpayee and Rajnath lose out to the Advani crowd? BJP is the Loser no 1
The BJP : When Shiv Sena voted for a “Maharashtrian” instead of Shekawat, the NDA candidate (Shekawat would have made a very good president, far better than his would have been predecessor who really didn’t know he had a job. BTW, what happened to Afzal’s mercy plea, did he make paper missiles with it?) it undermined everything that the Hindutva movement stands for in this country. Maharashtra is above India, said Shiv Sena. Will India’s only “Nationalist” party live with that. What does the brown shorts in Nagpur say about that. Do they hold any water. Anymore.
The bottomline is once dividing people becomes your habit, it becomes you. One day you’ll divide Hindus and Muslims, the other day you’ll get divided by Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

When did Rajnath become a saner voice. It was he who took the hardline Hindutva stand in the UP elections that culminated in the muslim cd scandal.
Probably this would be the most venomous Presidential Fight we might record in the history books. It is also unfortunate that BJP snooped to this level rather than elegently taking the sure defeat.
But then, where does the non-BJP, non-ThirdFront stand? Any better, by any chance? Where is there Ball(s)? Which court is it in? Lost it completely? !!!!!

Anon, there will be no non-BJP,non-Congress alternative unless the left joins it. In India’s current political scenario, given the numbers in the house, the Left will not opt for one. We had very successful 3rd fronts in the past, will have one pbly in 2009, most pbly supporting from outside Mayawati for Prime Ministership.
